DMAIC follows the steps Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control. The foundation of the Six Sigma methodology is based on a five-step process referred to as DMAIC.
Let’s say, you are on your way to work in your car, when you suddenly hear some loud noise and your car stopped.
- First DEFINE the problem – Your Car is having some issues.
- Then you MEASURE the problem – You try to start the Car. It starts but stops within a few feet. Something looks really wrong. So, you take it to the garage.Â
- Then you ANALYZE to find the Root Cause – The Mechanic opens up the hood and figures out the problem.
- Then you IMPROVE the situation – The Mechanic fixes the problem. The Car had run out of Oil. The oil container was almost empty and the Engine choked on the old oil. The Mechanic cleans up the Engine, replaces the Oil and re-starts the Engine.
- Finally you CONTROL your gains – The Mechanic advises you to replace the Engine Oil every 2000 kms. You remember to replace engine oil every 2000 kms to avoid this problem next time around.
